Musing on next week's game

Alison is running one of her Victorian monster hunting games this Sunday. I'm up to run next Sunday and musing on ideas. The Ulthmar game I ran last week went down well, sooo....perhaps another S&S thief game?

The the Ulthmar scenario in the Sword and Sorcery Codex tells us that the Great Tyrant has survived two uprisings...umm....?

Rebellions cost money - arms, supplies, mercenaries. As well as nobles, merchants have money.
Perhaps some merchants secretly funded the last uprising?
Perhaps not all the money was spent?
Perhaps someone knows where it is stashed?
Some will want the money.
Some merchants will want to silence anyone who knows of their (so far undiscovered) involvement in the uprising - and the money.
A prisoner sentenced to a life in the galley fleet is surprisingly still alive.
They have escaped and washed up in Ulthmar.
He knows where the money is and which merchant(s) supplied it.

The hunt is on!

Re: Musing on next week's game

I've posted in the Weird Lands and Forgotten Islands section a report on the game outlined above. The above was a blast to play, if I say so myself. Ulthmar is different from most things I run as usually I try to root a setting in a pulp version of a real world culture and/or location. This is a more trad rpg 'kitchen sink' setting, and I haven't run one of those in years.

More Ulthmar games are on the way. We are calling the series 'Wild Nights in Ulthmar' as at least some of each game will take place on the streets of the city at night. I'm currently writing Wild Night 3....

A forgery of an ancient lost book of philosophy (consisting of 25 tattered scrolls) will be a life changing pay day for a noble's librarian.

His master plans to donate the original book to the Tyrant's library.

The noble's librarian plans to donate the forgery to the Tyrant's library and travel abroad to sell the original to another collector.

Sparrow and Raven plan to steal the original.

Oh, and the original scrolls may be cursed.

Sounds like a great set up.

Re: Musing on next week's game

I'm currently writing a fourth Ulthmar game (Wild Night 4), based on the city outlined in the scenario 'Wild Night in Ulthmar' in the Sword and Sorcery Codex. (I ran that around 6 weeks ago, making that Wild Night 1.) I've posted in the Weird Lands and Forgotten Islands section an AP about 'Wild Night 2', the first one I wrote, and I really must find time to post about 'Wild Night 3' which was built around the forgery of an ancient lost book.

However, this week it's both my wedding anniversary and my birthday, so I expect I'll be too drunk to get around to it.

But I am writing the next one: It's high summer in Ulthmar, a time of celebration in the city with numerous events that even the paranoid and reclusive Great Tyrant can't totally avoid. One event is a race down the river by small grain barges representing the various merchant houses of Ulthmar. The whole city watches the race, bets on the outcome, and generally makes merry.

A young noblewoman who leads a double life as a crime boss (just for kicks!) 'asks' Sparrow and Raven to lead a gang ripping off a nobleman's pleasure boat moored on the river to watch the race. A boat packed with the great and the good who will be too smashed to notice the thieving going on around them. The nobleman was mean to the young noblewoman at court and 'needs teaching a lesson'.

Meanwhile, Sparrow's love, Spiezel the philosopher/duelist has been hired to fight a duel on behalf of an argumentative but aged noble. All three plan to meet up later at a big public ball held in the park in the city that evening.

But someone plots revenge. It's not just spoilt young noblewomen who think someone needs teaching a lesson.

Some good while back I bought the Savage Worlds scenario book 'Savage Tales of the Thieves Guild', for use with BoL. Frankly I was unimpressed by the scenarios. However, Ulthmar gives me a chance to cannibalise them for parts (I've already used the beggars Barabas and Ratface) and the tale 'Crimson Barge' will be used in part for Wild Night 4.

Nothing goes to waste if you bend, fold and mutilate it enough.

I saw "Savage Tales of the Thieves Guild" and got really excited! Then I saw "Frankly, I was unimpressed with the scenarios" and my hopes crashed. Still, what follows sounds like it could be useful. As you say, nothing goes to waste if you bed, fold, and mutilate it enough!

(Seems to me I've had a few characters that had a similar philosophy.)

Oh, and "Happy Birthday!" and "Happy Anniversary!" Hope you enjoy yourself!

Re: Musing on next week's game

Don't worry, we will enjoy ourselves!

My opinion of the Savage Worlds scenario book is just my opinion - you might find them more to your taste. There are 14 scenarios in the book and some are quite brief. Nothing wrong with that of course - actually, I generally like stuff that leaves plenty of room for me to add stuff. But I thought some were quite railroady and not in a good way. There was often only one way to resolve the situation the PCs found themselves in, or it assumed that PCs would follow just one course of action.

Also, I admit to a prejudice that I find 'thieves guilds' a bit of a naff idea. It was a good enough joke in Lieber's stories, but underworld guilds I find rather silly and should have stayed in prose and not escaped into rpgs. Underworld alliances that shift between gangs, which are by their nature usually not long lasting, and often break down in violence are not only more believable but are a better source of gaming material.

But that's just me.

Why not ask around to see what other people think of the book? They may have a different take.

If I run across it, I'll give it a look see. Not really hunting for new expenditures anyway just now!

While I realize it's just your taste/opinion, from our interactions here I think we might be somewhat simpatico on such things.

P.S. Just looked it up. Hadn't realized it was Lankhmar: Savage Tales of the Thieves Guild! That might tip the scales a bit. (Though I've never read any of the Savage Tales Lankhmar stuff.)
