I didn't see it as anything worse than the 1e Dungeon Masters Guide. A few cases of toplessness buried inside. I didn't see anything wrong, but to each his own.

Thanks, Steve--yes, I have started looking at the Codex as well. I have been gathering spells (and other info as well) from there and other BoL sources where I can find them. It is helping me see what others have done to convert spells from other games or come up with their own. I do want to stick as close to the general theme or feel of BoL as I can--I really dig the vibe it has!

I started posting a spell a week over on my main website, https://untold-realms.com. My goal is to, well, post a new spell (or a conversion of old ones) each week. I have a couple out there. Is this something anyone is interested in? If not, I won't bother folks here.

Thieves World, definitely.

Thank you! I've been gaming since about 1980. I started out with The Fantasy Trip (Melee was my gateway game!) I played AD&D with my friends and some older folks, but never really loved it. After a break, I got back into gaming around 2015. I've pretty much been solo gaming since.

I've played Traveller/Cepheus Engine, TFT again, and got into Blades & Black Magic, by CR Brandon. It is a retro-clone of TFT. I really liked it as a S&S flavor of TFT, but he did not finish it with a magic system. So I have gone looking for a game that is still active and supported--and came to BoL.

I have a number of solo campaigns I have been dabbling in, but my current one is a S&S campaign set in a far future, post apocalyptic Earth. My main inspirations were the Moon Men by ERB, Virgin of Valkarion, by Paul Anderson, Empire of the East, by Fred Saberhagen and of course, Conan, by REH. The main location is a city-state on the edge of a desert, in what was the Gulf of Mexico--the oceans have retreated, leaving a strip of desert by a (now) inland sea. There are two races: humans, and their giant ape-like overlords (reskinned ogres). It has a lot of inspiration for me to play with, so I'm digging it right now.

Folks, how do you handle grappling in BoL?

In particular, I'm looking for a way to handle creatures that may want to grab a Hero, and then do other things to him or her. In other games, I've seen contest rolls against something like Strength, where both sides roll and the one who succeeds the most wins. I've looked through the rules and can't find that mentioned anywhere (if it is there and I missed it, I apologize...)

Anyway, how about this: If a creature wants to grapple with a Hero, it must first make a successful attack. It can then attempt to grapple by having the creature and the hero roll against attack (creature) and defense (Hero). If they both fail, no grapple. If the creature fails, no grapple. If the Hero fails but the creature succeeds, it has grappled. If they both succeed, and the Hero ties or succeeds by more, no grapple. If they both succeed and the creature succeeds by more, the creature has grappled. On the next turn, it can try to do whatever with the Hero (swallow them, bash them, etc.)

Thank, you, GIT. Looking forward to being active!
