Haha, thanks for the reply... two days to catch a six year old thread necro is pretty prompt!

Your swashbuckling sounds pretty great... but no stop in Avignon? There's gotta be some ancient mystery there somewhere!

It's not in the right time period, but sometime you might check out "The Cheese and the Worms" by Carlo Ginzburg. It's a really interesting account of a heretic peasant, his theology, and his trial. He also wrote "The Night Battles" about the Roman inquisition and its cases but I never read that one. Happy haunting!

I will give Edge a try when I finally get to run a game I've half-written, which is set in 1730s Rome.

Well, six years on and a follow-up question, how about that?

I was looking for something else and this comment intrigued me. I've been reading around EME history stuff for an Italin-ish fantasy campaign. Did you ever run this? What did you have in mind, swashbuckling Jesuit "pope's commandos"? French mercenaries to fight the various small wars? Nobody seems to care about anything south of Toscana when they plan an Italian game (regardless of period).

Hi, I had a very similar idea for my BoL/D&D mashup that I haven't run yet. The "vancian"/D&D mages are the scholarly type, and those from other cultures are of the sorcerer/warlock type. At one point I intended to have the sorcerer/warlocks go with the freeform BoL style, and I never saw any reason that wouldn't work (assuming I got the Vancian stuff right). I had two very different campaign areas and really liked the idea of "foreign" magic being powered and used totally differently. Go for it!

I've actually been using Simon's d20 version of Crimson Blades to run a game set in Thieve's World using the original Chaosium boxed set. The random encounters have been a lot of fun and Crimson Blades has a real Stormbringer feel to it.

Thanks, there are so many offshoots of this game it's crazy! I'll peek at those too...

Hi all, this may be a stupid question but... what is intended where the regular D&D magic system is suggested? In particular, is the idea that the spells become automatic to cast but with targets making saving throws? Or is the idea that the caster still makes a spellcasting roll? Adding saving throws to that then seems to weaken magic even more.

I like the idea of switching to caster success to determine spell effect; I've always wanted to switch to that in D&D by inverting the saving throws so the caster tries to get a high roll on a d20 to affect a target (rather than the target needing to roll low on a d20 to avoid effects of an automatic spell).

I'm curious if anyone's tried this, or if anyone (hi Simon!) knows what the original idea was, that would be helpful too. Thanks!

Just started in a BoL Hack in Thieves’ World ok play by post. Too early to tell you my impressions, other than the swingier d20 and difficulties seem to make heroes feel a bit more 0 than default BoL characters. I do like it so far.

When you say "more 0" you mean more useless/incompetent? Maybe ratchet the difficulties down some? TN 10 should be reachable for somebody with career and attribute bonuses in something.

I just came across this game again a couple of months ago after playing an Everywhen game with the illustrious Gnombient He actually suggested it to me years ago but after hitting a wall with 5E world design I found I could do everything and more with the BoL Hack. I haven't run it yet but after playing straight BoL I look forward to trying it out...
