Has anyone ever tried it? I've been looking at games like Dungeon World and Legends in the Mist recently which also use the 2d6 core dice mechanic but in those games they have a middle "success with complications" tier of results in addition to pass/fail. Has anyone tried those games or tried incorporating that mechanic into BoL?
The bonuses in BoL can get much higher than the +3 you typically find in PBTA like Dungeon World so the tiers might have to be shifted. I prefer some of the core BoL ideas/mechanics much more than you find in those games but I do find some things lacking at times as well in my admittedly limited play experience.

You could easily get some of that. You have crits and complete failures already in the form of Mighty Success and Calamitous Failure. You could add that a tie (9) is a partial success. For that matter, you can also say that from 3-8 is not a complete failure — rather some sort of “no, but…” result. I wouldn’t change the actual resolution system.

True, I didn't mention the equivalent of crit success and failures when I said it was otherwise pass/fail. I was more focused on the partial success/success with a cost. Activating it on exactly what you need for success (9) is a good choice albeit one that is relatively rare. If you only want a touch of the mechanic introduced, that's probably the best.option. Initially I was considering making an 8-9 be a partial and a 10+ be a full success so that full success is one die result less likely but you have two partials to make up for it.
