I feel your pain with players who sign up to a pulp game and want to be a science wizz (totally fine) but make the PC a combat klutz (not fine at all). Been there, suffered that.

And your set-up sounds great. I like the idea of mystery men/adventurer super team.

Thanks! I think I've figured out their patron.

Cue maniacal laughter!

Mwuh ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

(Not actually bad for them, but it feels rather inspired and ties into pre-Pulp adventure/mystery icons.)

Please let us know how it goes.

Are you using Dicey Tales for the ruleset?

Have to talk it over with the group. At least one of them struggles with the BoL rules, so I may end up using Dicey Tales purely as reference and doing it with Fate Condensed. I'd prefer the former, but don't want anyone sitting out because of the rules system.

Wow!! I'm surprised anyone could struggle with BoL mechanics!

Just for interest, why does the player struggle with BoL?

I'm not sure if it's because the player (older person, but new to gaming) started with Fate Accelerated and just got used to that? Although, Roll plus Mod seems like a pretty universal thing. Not sure if it's numbers vs. adjectives or what. (Though even in Fate, the Adjective has a numeric value. So you start the number associated with your base then add your roll. The result is then often related back to the Adjective Ladder.)

All I can say for sure is the player dropped out of the BoL game the group started, seemingly frustrated with the system. There was also a certain amount of not clicking with the genre/setting, but I think the mechanics were also an issue.

It probably doesn't help that, when someone is having a problem with a roll or rule, they get feedback from the GM and a few more knowledgeable players trying to be helpful. That probably results in overwhelm.

Very late to the conversation but just want to support the view that Lassiter is a terrific movie; definitely one of Selleck's best and the movie is very udnerappreciated.

Not a movie, but a great resource for pulp-style shennigans, is Tales of the Gold Monkey. It still holds up and I recommend it to everyone who loves pulp.

Wealth can be wonderful, but you know, success can test one's mettle as surely as the strongest adversary.

Which brings us back to the supplement 'Dicey Tales Adventures No.1' and wicked Gamboa Station. We had some great fun in that setting!

I loved Tales of the Gold Monkey when it was on and have the DVD set!
