Re: Barbarians of Legend (BoL)

I'm interested in hearing what you folks think of the evolving ruleset.  I've been working on my own ruleset for a while that is inspired in part by BoL (along with other games like Forbidden Lands) so I don't want to give the impression of cribbing from the newest incarnation otherwise I'd ask to see it too. I hope you get to play soon for selfish reasons!

Re: Barbarians of Legend (BoL)

I've made major updates to "Basic BoL". The document runs to 12 pages, which is more than I wanted. However, that does include rules for spellcasting, crafting, mixing (potions) and appeals (to the gods). It also includes the monster creation rules and a couple of pages of (greek-style) monsters. The basics are only about 4 pages. If anyone wants a look, please PM me with your email. There might be some changes you hadn't expected!  I'm playtesting tonight.

The playtest went well, resulting in a few changes (which is what playtesting is for, after all). Anyone else who wants to give it a look (or even better, play it!), drop me a PM with your email. Cheers.

Re: Barbarians of Legend (BoL)

I ran it on Monday and really enjoyed it, as did everyone else.

Some questions to the floor in no particular order (Simon or other GMs): Careers for Toughs, is it a “main career” i.e. roll with a bonus dice or a “secondary”, no bonus dice? Or is this just another level of granularity in creating Toughs?

A  hero using a heavy weapon and wearing heavy armour has no negative modifiers to their attack roll, is this by design?

On page 25, under attacking, it would imply large missile weapons use might, but the missile weapons table on page 17 says they use agility, which would you use?

Not explicit (I don’t think) but if a hero doesn’t have a warrior skill then all attack rolls are with a penalty dice. However there are some careers like Hunter which aren't a warrior career but include weapon use. My take was that while a hunter might be good at stalking arrows with a bow, being in a combat where the “prey” is fighting back is another level.

One of my players made a point of why would he ever choose a buckler over a shield, he wasn’t happy with my answer - “For narrative reasons”.

On page 21 there is a reference to mind, which should be wits.

I've another session on Thursday.

I notice that the published date is 19/10/2024, is this the new combination of the two pdfs or the earlier version?

This is a combined version (which runs to 49 pages). I got myself a copy of the original version earlier on (19th) ...but by then I'd decided to do some new stuff and then thought why not just combine them!

I would say toughs generally only have a "secondary" career. But if you want to make a "tougher" tough, no reason you shouldn't do so.
Heroes using hefty weapons - I see these weapons requiring more strength than agility, but I do see what you are saying. I'll have to think again about that!
That should be agility for missile weapons - I'll have to update that.
Indeed - if your main career is a warrior - then you roll 3d take best two. If its a secondary career, then you roll 2d. If you don't have a warrior career, you roll 3d take lowest two. Hunters are not warriors. If it was a main career, I'd allow 3d take best two (or secondary career, 2d) if they were firing their bow/crossbow/throwing a spear at an unaware target but the minute it turns into a combat, being a hunter does not help one jot.
Buckler v shield: The game doesn't really have enough granularity for any real distinction between shields/bucklers so you are right, it is more of a narrative or even character thing. A swashbuckler probably wouldn't use a shield for example and many crossbowmen might only have a buckler - they don't expect to get into melee much. Same reason there's no real distinction between types of sword or pole-arms etc.  Just drop one or the other if its that much of a problem for your players! Alternatively, if your players like having money, make the shield more costly.
Mind/wits- I think I've changed that already, but I'll double check.
Thanks for the feedback - glad you're enjoying it.

Re: Barbarians of Legend (BoL)

Yeah, it's really good! Already hacking it to include firearms!

Just managed to download the latest (combined) version and looks like you forgot to update the contents page.
