I ran a scenario from the Everywhen/BoL supplement, the Sword and Sorcery Codex: ‘Wild Night in Ulthmar’. (It was inspired by Fritz Leiber’s tales of the Twain.) I mentioned this before in General Discussion. It went so well my wife Alison demanded another adventure set in Ulthmar, so I wrote and ran the following. (It's 1648 words long, so you don't have to read it if you don't want to.) Here it is:
Alison’s PC is Sparrow – a one-time sailor and now thief in Ulthmar, who comes from a land across the sea. She is a short, dark-skinned woman, “…with a big mouth!” Her best friend Raven is the most beautiful thief in the city. Raven is currently involved with another foreigner living in the city, Speizel the Philosopher – a bravo, duellist, remorseless killer of shark cultists, and sometime assassin.
Barabas the beggar, who protected Raven when she was a child living on the streets of the city, found them in Puig’s Poke (a bar) where they were looking for work. He was accompanied by his partner Ratface and also had another beggar with him, who turned out to be a fugitive – Durandus. Durandus had also been a child beggar protected by Barabas, and when a teenager he had been Raven’s first love. He has just escaped from one of the Tyrant’s galleys and swam ashore that very evening. He had spent five years in the galley chained next to Sandrin, a man like himself condemned to the galleys for life, for taking part in the last uprising against the Tyrant.
Rebellions cost money. Unhappy with high taxes, some merchants secretly funded the last uprising. But not all the money was spent. A secret cache was hidden on an island over 200 miles away. Sandrin was there at its burial. He told Durandus where the three locked chests were hidden on the island. Sandrin now is dead, murmured by a conspirator he thought he could trust. This was a relative, the merchant Fabianus, who had provided the uprising with the treasure in those chests.
Once ashore, Sandrin led Durandus to Fabianus’s townhouse in the rich district. They were welcomed and fed by Fabianus and his son Patriz. Fabianus listened to Sandrin’s tale of the hidden treasure, safe to fund the next rebellion. He then called his men in and had them kill Sandrin. Durandus jumped through and window into the street and ran for his life. He bumped into his old protector Barabas, who sought out Raven, to help Durandus leave the city.
Fabianus clearly wants to silence anyone who knows of his (so far undiscovered) involvement in the uprising – which now includes Sparrow, Raven and Barabas - and he also wants the buried money. After all, it is his. Durandus pointed out that Fabianus will send one of his ships in the morning to sail to the island and dig up the treasure. If they want to get the loot for themselves, they need to find a ship willing to take them and sail tonight.
Raven called over Speizel, who had just arrived to receive payment for some secret task. It was agreed his sword arm would be useful. It was lucky for them that Sparrow’s old shipmate Jakelin was now running a smuggling ship out of Ulthmar – she was sure he would be willing to help for a share of the treasure. Barabas was an old man, so he would not be accompanying them to the island, and Ratface wasn’t up for a sea voyage.
As they were about to leave a group of armed men arrived, who wore badges of House Fabianus on their tunics. They scanned the room, while Jorge the simple-minded but huge bouncer told them that they should know better than to come here armed to the teeth. Jorge was stabbed in the back as one man shouted, “There he is!”, and pointed at Durandus. Sparrow and Raven liked Jorge, and these thugs were clearly about to kill Durandus. Hilarity ensued.
The armed men were cut down by Raven and Speizel while Sparrow shot some down with her bow. The owner appeared to deal with the bodies, while Raven dealt with Jorge’s wound. Fun over, the customers went back to drinking and making deals.
Heading over to Dockside, Sparrow found her old shipmate Captain Jakelin and his First Mate Dreu drinking in a dingy tavern. Jakelin was happy to sail to the island of Tintomiscro for a cut of the treasure. He gathered his men so they could set sail before sun rise. Jakelin’s ship was a fast, light, ship that would be quicker than any of Fabianus’s merchant cogs.
The voyage was uneventful and took two and a half days, arriving on Tintomiscro around midday. The only incidents on the journey were Durandus getting increasingly surly with Speizel, as the nature of Raven and Speizel’s relationship became clear. Raven tried speaking to Durandus about his behaviour, but it became clear that she was, for him, ‘the one that got away’. He was still in love with her (or the girl she had once been) and Speizel guested that Durandus had dreams of going off with Raven to start a new life together, once they had the money.
Sparrow eventually had hard words for Durandus when his behaviour got likely to start a fight. “Speizel could kill you without raising a sweat, and so could I. Behave like an adult, and not a child.”
First Mate Dreu had hated Durandus on sight, so grinned at Sparrow. On the other hand, Speizel felt sorry for Durandus.
On the deserted island Durandus let them up into the hills, following his old oarmate’s tale. They came to a very old mausoleum in a narrow valley. With some foreboding Sparrow and the others climbed the steps to the entrance to the domed structure. Past the door was a small chamber with a couple of side niches which had contained coffins (long since looted). Durandus led them up the stairs into the domed room where there was a long, flat, beautifully decorated marble sarcophagus. Durandus said that there was a concealed chapel under the sarcophagus which slid aside when certain parts of the sarcophagus decoration were pushed in. He confessed he had no idea what these were.
Sparrow and Raven set to work, and on the base of the structure they found that some tiny marble tiles moved. They just had to hit them in the right combination. Eventually there was a loud click and the whole structure moved along the floor, exposing a set of stairs. Going down with lit torches they entered the chapel. There was some light coming from a large hole in the back wall. Durandus rushed to the altar at the far end and he and the others began to dismantle it. Which was when Sparrow heard a sound behind her and the snake struck.
A colossal constrictor had entered via the hole and had made the chapel it’s home. It did not like intruders. Awaked by the party, it struck! It grabbed Sparrow’s shoulder in its jaws as it wrapped its coils around her. Sparrow slashed it with her kopis before it was too tight for sword work. She managed to get to her dagger and stabbed again and again with one free arm. Meanwhile, Raven stabbed the beast repeatedly with her short sword. Speizel rushed over to help and finally the snake was dead. Sparrow was in a bad way, but her leather armour had helped her survive.
While Raven tended her wounds and Sparrow drank some wine, Durandus, Captain Jakelin, and his sailors carried the three heavy chests up the staircase, with Speizel following on. Sparrow asked Raven if she could climb up the wall to the hole and look outside. She also asked her to take a rope and secure it so they could climb up or down if necessary. Sparrow was taking no chances. Just as well, as shouts from above meant it was necessary.
Inside the dome chamber, the men had been surprised by Fabianus’s sailors. Hearing that Raven and Sparrow (painfully) climbed up the rope and to the cliff edge behind the dome. Scrabbling down the slope they entered the ground chamber and each crouched in an empty niche either side of the stairs. As the first of the merchant’s sailors entered the room their throats were quietly cut, severing their voice box’s as well. Jakelin’s disarmed sailors came next, followed by more men destined for slit throats. Then came the leader of the enemy party, still taunting his captives. Sparrow drew her kopis and hacked his head clean off. Then came Jakelin and Speizel who rapidly armed themselves.
The remaining House Fabianus sailors were disarmed and made to carry the chests back to the beach. Which is where they saw a House Fabianus cog alongside Jakelin’s ship. Howling with rage, Sparrow got Jakelin to light a torch and began firing fire arrows into the cog. She ignored the pain from her sides as she was furious. A fight started out on Jakelin’s ship and Fabianus’s men began being dumped over the side. She knew the cog would not be destroyed, but the men on board would concentrate on dealing with the fire before chasing after them. They made their way to their ship and set sail.
As Raven picked the locks on the chest Sparrow cautioned that they must kill Fabianus and his son as soon as possible if they were to survive in Ulthmar. Jakelin pointed out that Fabianus only had the one son. More distant relatives would be too busy scrabbling for control of the merchant company to look into the deaths. Speizel said they could leave the assassination to him.
Raven opened the first chest. It was filled with rocks. So were the other two. “Someone else knew!”, said Jakelin. Durandus wailed. Raven looked stunned.
“Are they ‘special’ rocks?” said Sparrow, knowing the answer.
Speizel laughed. “What a great jest!! Well…they do say travel broadens the mind.”
