Kull the Conqueror was on the TV last night, and as I’d never seen it, I watched it. It was exactly as people said, a travesty of both REH and the character, but it did have one great line:
“Your bride is 3000 years old.”
“She told me she was 19.”
Also, it confirmed something I’ve always thought with my GM head on – even a crappy film may have a scene, trick, gadget, or idea you can steal. In Kull the fact that to kill the demon Kull had to kiss it was both funny, icky, and potentially dangerous.
To stick with bad films based on Howard properties, the disappointing Soloman Kane film had some nice bits to steal: a demon curse ‘blessed’ on the followers of a sorcerer; a mad priest feeding his congregation who have turned into ghouls by waylaying travellers (he kept them under his church, as you do).
Have you used any bits from rubbish films to good effect in one of your games?

I quite enjoyed Solomon Kane. Just like I enjoyed Jonah Hex (not REH, I know, but another one that was panned).

My feeling on Solomon Kane was that it wasn't a bad film, but it really wasn't about Solomon Kane. I feel that way about a lot of adaptations, to be honest.

Paul nails it!
I should have been clearer - I quite enjoyed the film, and would happily watch it again but it wasn't really Soloman Kane for me. I like James Pruefoy (best Mark Anthony ever) but I think he was miscast as Kane, even though he comes from Kane's part of the UK.
