For my recent "not-Traveller" game, I decided to do something different in character creation. Rather than giving characters 4 points in Combat Abilities and 4 points in Careers, I told them to choose 4 Careers at Rank 0 and then divide 8 points among CAs and Careers however they like, so long as they put at least 1 point in each category. None of the players went the "full scholar" route (7 in Careers / 1 in CA) or "full warrior" (7 in CA / 1 in Careers), but they did appreciate the added flexibility.

Ohh….interesting take on CharGen! I can see that working well for some games. Did any PCs end up 'unbalanced' in play - either in your opinion or in that of your players?
Personally I think 'balance' is overrated as a design choice and I really don't see the point of niche protection - both too limiting in my view.
