I've always like black and white ink art. Reminds me of The Savage Sword of Conan. I read quite a few as a kid.

I love black and white art over color as well. It feels more "gritty" to me.

You're right. It does seem grittier to me too. Often when I imagine an S&S scenario it is in pen and ink black and white.
