I could have killed him. He did the same thing with languages. The player in question will spend forever making a character, regardless of the game we are playing, regardless of the choices to make. I could give him 2 choices and he would agonize over it like his life was on the line, asking me to revisit the choices again and again from different angles.
Everyone else picked their boons and flaws in maybe 20 minutes (since I had to go around the room and alternate between everyone). I could easily see one player taking a half hour though, even if completely new.

As a followup to my earlier comment, I sat down with my group last night to make characters. Hours. Literally hours. One player spent almost 2 hours going over boons and flaws, and that was just giving him the ones from his regional origins and one career, not giving him the list to go over.
So yeah. Pregens.
half male and half female seems to be a good mix. Of course, you could leave the genders ambiguous to same yourself some work (let the player decide) and just focus on making a bunch of different characters.

I sat down with my group last night to make characters and have a little bit of feedback so far from the Kickstarter draft.
I really appreciate the "Reasons no to buy xx down" sections for each of the attributes. Seeing an equal discussion of the drawbacks of dumping your stats was nice to see. I would, however, like to see a stronger writeup for Appeal, since my players weren't really buying the threat. Having more tangable tasks associated with Appeal in the same way that Mind is described will make it comes across as more important now and less of something they can sack and work on later.
I would suggest reordering the names of some of the careers so that the more common name perhaps comes first. I found myself a few times looking for pirate, forgetting that it came under mariner, or executioner under gaoler. I know this is all symantics and purely subjective, but it does make it tricky if the game references them or if a player notes a more common title for a less common career.
I would also like to see the Heroic Beginnings/Origins section moved to an earlier part of character creation. Since your regional origins can dictate part of your career path, it felt very odd and limiting to have this come afterwards. A few of my players wanted to be from a particular region but couldn't because of the choices they made earlier (and didn't want to change the character in order to change their region). Also, since your first boon and flaw came from your origin, there was a lot of back and forth between here and the careers section. Moving this to the beginning or even just before careers might be a better place.
Lastly, I notced that Hero Points are only really presented (at least from what I could tell) in the summary at the end of the chapter, yet were referenced throughout. It would be nice to see these introduced earlier in the complete text rather than in the summary or in a later chapter, just so that character creation is a little more self contained and und

While I have no meaningful experience with convention gaming, here's my two cents. No matter how quick you think a game's character gen is, it will always take an hour or more. My group is made up mostly of experienced gamers, totally at times 8 players. Any time we try a new game, no matter what it is, no matter how simple the game, character gen takes 8 hours. FFG Star Wars took all night and there is basically nothing to do except pick your species and career. Numenera, which looked pretty quick, also took the better part of a day as players had to paw over lists of options. Even Golden Sky Stories, a game with practically no rules and almost no options outside of choosing character type, took hours. HOURS! I have no idea how they did that.
From my understanding, convention games are supposed to be demos, unless you are doing organized play like Shadowrun Missions or Pathfinder Society. You'd probably be best off keeping it simply and handing out pregens. Remember that an hour or introductions and character gen is an hour where you aren't killing snakes.
For your thoughts on in medias res, I've really liked when games do this. I've played in far too many games that stop dead when the GM spends days trying to assemble the group and get the story going. While it doesn't always work for every game or story, starting off in the action gets things going, gets the dice rolling, and gets the blood flowing (in more ways than one). If you can start with a good opening action scene, that should help speed things up, especially in a limited time frame with zero chance of continuation with that particular group. For specifics, this could be a very simple fight or perhaps the end of a fight (where many foes have already been dispatched or softened up already), since rules explanation will drag this out to longer than expected.
Hope that helps.

I'm new here. Long time gamer, first lime loinsloth wearer. I've been pointed towards BoL in my search for a more managable (rules, plot, and group management-wise) game for my group. From the reviews I've read and watched, I've found a really charming and deep game that is a lot more than just a rules-light action fest.
Still lacking the book and this more info on Lemuria as a setting (since Mythic is launching shortly), I'm pawing over possible setting options in the event that Lemuria turns out to be a little too gonzo.
Weird lands and forgotten islands » Barbarians of Magnamund? » 7/06/2014 10:30 pm |
I'm still looking over setting options, and an old thought came to mind. What are some thoughts on using Magnamund (from the Lone Wolf gamebooks series) as a setting for BoL? One obvious oddity would be the scope and scale of conflicts. Lone Wolf was pretty high fantasy compared to what I'm reading about the S&S genre, with the overarching conflict of the books being quite global. That being said, you should be able to find something more personal in the world.
Another oddity would the the Kai Lords and the degree that magic plays into the setting. But again, outside of the Lone Wolf metaplot, this is potentially not a big deal since the central character is the last survival Kai Lord for almost the entire original story.
What do you think? How servicable would this setting be? Could a guy easily make it work in BoL, or is it just too high fantasy to play nicely? Is there enough depth in the setting, or are there simply better choices out there?
Thanks.

It should always be noted that Kickstarter is not a preorder system; it's a fundraising platform. While a lot of publishers and companies do use Kickstarter to fulfill preorders (thus making the "I'll wait for retail" argument valid), that's really not its intention. If you like the project and wish to support it (and are capable and willing), you should support it. That this book might end up in retail shouldn't prevent people from backing, because honestly, look how "easy" it is to get a printed version of Legendary (quotes mean it's expensive).
I have a suggestion/piece of feedback. I'm interesting in picking up BoL based on some suggestions from RPG.net posters. But with a new edition coming out almost immediately with more setting info and hopefully a better method of purchasing a print version, this puts me in a weird spot. I still wouldn't mind picking up Legendary so that I can get a game going and learn more about the Lemuria setting, but I see little monetary value with an update staring me right in the face, since I'll likely be replacing it shortly with Mythic.
In light of this, would you consider offering a download code to backers for Legendary (in addition to the draft of the new edition) or perhaps consider putting Legendary on sale during the campaign? I've seen some KS campaigns offer pledge levels and deals for past publications or other works from the creator, so the idea isn't that far fetched. This would also let backers who are new to the game have a little extra bonus to use while Mythic is being finished.
