Yeah, but if you've got 3 Heroes each with maybe two or three HP left, they still have (combined) more than the villain.

Correct, I should have added that I am usually running a game with only 2 heroes, and they are usually down to 1 or 2 HP by the time the final battle commences.   If more heroes are involved, then another 1 or 2 VP for the villain.

I also give my Toughs a boon or two (plus a flaw) and sometimes I will give one the Marked by the Gods boon for 1 HP.

Rambling over: how do you use VP (and what have been the consequences)?

My villains usually have 3 VP, when I make the villain, I will use 2 of the VP for extra boons.  I have found that a villain with 3 VP will usually be a good/tough final battle for the heroes, since like you posted - they have most likely used up a few HPs prior to the final confrontation.

One reason I'm not running BoL Wilderlands is that I've found it very difficult to scale BoL for larger groups (I have 5 players), specifically presenting appropriately challenging combat encounters -- this is not to say that it can't be done,

I was just going through some older posts and read (maybe re-read this..)  I agree, I have found that BoL really works well for 1-3 PCs, when you have 4, 5, or more, it gets a bit harder; at least that is what I have found.  Like you said, it can be done, but it's just harder.

I actually think it is the best when you have 2 PCs... ala Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser

Thoughts?

Nah, I don't use any armor or weapon proficiencies in any of my BoL campaigns.  Don't see any need for it.  If I want a crunchier system, I would probably just go back to the Mongoose Conan d20 game, it has plenty of crunch to it.

Over the last two weekends, we have continued on with our Hyborian Age campaign.  I ran the S&P adventure "Bitter Oranges" by Rodrigo Vilanova de Allende and the next week I ran "To Race the Thunder" from the Modephius 2d20 Quickstart rules.

First, "Bitter Oranges".  I did not think that my wife would go with the premise for her PC being hired at the start of this adventure, but she did.  And she went with it hook & sinker.  The story played out really well.  The final battle was epic, my wife was actually shocked at the end.  I had a back-up outline for the adventure, but didn't have to use it.  Pretty happy about that.

"To Race the Thunder" was awesome.   A non-stop running & fighting adventure.  Our PCs ended up killing 32 Picts and an Unnaturally Enhanced Black Panther.  They even managed to save some of the settlers.
My wife told me that it ran just like the Conan story.  (She's read Howard's original Conan stories.)

I did change it up a bit though, our characters where not employed as Scouts at the start but were passing through and came across an Aquilonian Scout being chased by a group of Picts.

Next up this weekend is "Thunder's Bounty" by David Thomas.  It starts out in Velitrium, and is kind of a continuation of "To Race the Thunder".  Have the conversion done already, just have to get my maps in order.  Looks like a good story too.

After that I have "The Thousand Eyes of Aumeg-Bel" from Modephius Conan 2d20 and then "Heretics of Tarantia" from the Mongoose d20 Conan RPG.  I might take a break from this campaign before these two though, have some other stuff brewing.

I've run various campaigns now with BoL:  Hyborian Age, Beasts & Barbarians Dread Sea Dominions, Legends of Steel - Erisa, Warhammer Fantasy, Red Hand of Doom, Sons of Gruumsh, Freeport, Lankhmar, The Witcher, The Savage North (d101 Games), and some others.

I have a file of other possible campaigns to play too, some of them are set to go, some of them have just been started.  Here are a few:  Curse of the Crimson Throne, Legacy of the Crystal Shard, Shadowed Keep on the Borderlands, The Northlands Saga, Thunder Rift, Ravenloft, and a few others.

I also worked up some Modern era stuff using a matchup of BoL Dogs of W.A.R. and d20 Modern.  One campaign is set in the 80s and the other is modern day.  Have not played these, but maybe someday, specially the 80s period one.

BoL, with some house rules, is a very versatile system.  It can be used for probably any type of setting or time period.

there didn't seem to be any reason for NPCs to have an Initiative score.

From the BoL Mythic rulebook, page 64:
 Priority Roll Modifiers
If a tough or a villain has an initiative score, take the highest such score of those involved and subtract this from the Heroes’ Priority Rolls. If no initiative is listed, treat as zero.

The last few weeks we returned to the Hyborian Age "Hammer of Æs" campaign.  I had converted the Signs & Portents adventure "Hunting the Falcon" and it turned out pretty good.  Then I ran an adventure called "Deadly Nights in Messantia" where the characters got involved in solving a string of prostitute murders.  (A necromancer had hired some thugs to kill some prostitutes and bring him back body parts for a ritual that he was going to perform.)  I have run this before in my Freeport campaign and like the storyline, some changes were made and it turned out good.  The PCs never encountered the necromancer, as they turned their findings over to the Patrol, who told them that they would take it from there.  Several days later - the PCs found out that the Patrol had gone out to arrest the necromancer and he had fled, while his large tulwar wielding Shemite bodyguard held them off.

The next week, I ran an adventure called "The Merchant's Crypt" the PCs were approached by a female who wanted them to find out what had happened to her husband.  He and an accomplice, decided to break into a wealthy merchant's crypt - thinking that he had been buried with some of his wealth.  They were missing for the last three days.

The PCs agreed to help the woman and after some legwork around the city of Messantia (where they learned that the dead merchant and his brother were suspected of being involved with magic), they headed east to the cemetery.   Using stealth, perception, and some athletics, they got into the walled off cemetery, avoiding the guards that patrol it.  Inside the cemetery they found the merchant's crypt and inside the crypt, they located a hidden wall that led to a chamber with a trap door.  They did see some recent sandaled footprints leading down.  Under the crypt, they found the dead thieves and the creature that killed them (a kind of flesh golem).  They destroyed the golem and after taking the dead thieves wedding band, set off to return to Messa

My wife and I have been using BoL pretty exclusively since 2014 when we switched our "Hammer of Æs" Hyborian Age campaign from the Mongoose d20 system to the BoL Legendary system, then later Mythic.  We have used it to run numerous campaigns:  Warhammer, Jalizar (from Savage Worlds Beasts and Barbarians), Legends of Steel, Freeport (Green Ronin's campaign), The Red Hand of Doom (D&D), and several others.  (Heck I have a file of campaigns that I want to play, just don't have time:  Hellfrost, The World of Xoth, some Modern era Spy/Spec Ops stuff, Lemuria, The Northlands Saga, and others...)

I have also used it to run a handful of Hyborian Ag adventures for my wife and two friends, a Freeport campaign for my wife and friend (it did not last long though ) and the Sons of Gruumsh adventure for my wife and a friend too.  That one was a blast!

We sometimes switch over to The Fantasy Trip "In the Labyrinth" from time to time for a change now and then.  But always find ourselves back to BoL.

Last two nights we returned to our "Hammer of Æs" campaign, I ran the "Hunting the Falcon" adventure from Mongoose's S&P series.  When I was converting it, I wasn't really "feeling it", but it played out REALLY good, my wife loved the adventure!  I'm looking for an urban adventure to adapt since our PCs are planning on staying in Messantia for a bit (they got a pouch of silver to spend after all...)

We LOVE BoL (I have almost every supplemental product for it too, but really BoL Mythic with some house rules is what we use... it just works!)

SimonW = a big THANK YOU from my wife and I

I have been running assorted one on one BoL campaigns now for the last 10 years or so for my wife and I.  (I have also run some short BoL campaigns for her and a friend or two in the past.)

For our BoL Sword and Sorcery campaigns (Hyborian Age, Beasts and Barbarians, Legends of Steel), we prefer to use the d6 for weapon damage solely.  (Small weapon d6L, regular weapons d6, and large weapons d6H).  Mastercraft, finely-made, or superior weapons get the feature of:   re-rolling any 1 on the damage dice (must keep the re-roll) and they only have a 50% or sometimes a 1/6 chance of breaking on a break weapon situation.  Some weapons may have an alchemical bonding of silver, to grant them the ability to damage/destroy certain creatures.  If a weapon is enchanted (highly unlikely, but sometimes possible - a d3 dice is added to the damage vs the particular foe/monster/etc..).

For our BoL Fantasy Campaigns we have sometimes used d4 for small weapons, d6 for med weapons and d8 for large weapons.  (Monsters still only use d6s though...)  Masterwork, finely-made, superior weapons work the same.  Enchanted weapons get to roll d4h, d6h, and d8h and sometimes get an additional d3 dice of damage vs a particular creature too, depends on how legendary the weapon is.

However, my wife really prefers to use the d6 dice solely, so lately our BoL Warhammer, BoL Witcher, and BoL Freeport campaigns have only used the d6 dice for weapon damage.

Our "Hammer of Æs" Hyborian Age campaign was converted to BoL from the Mongoose d20 Conan system back around September of 2014 and is still going, in fact we are in the process of picking it up again after a few months layoff.  Converting the Signs and Portents adventure "Hunting the Falcon" by Leo LaDell over to it with hopes of running it this weekend.  (Or we might go back to our BoL Jalizar or BoL Warhammer campaign... choices, choices, choices
