We played a good bit of BoL this year, different campaigns (Warhammer, Witcher, Jalizar, and our Hyborian Age "Hammer of Æs" campaign - that we finished after 13 years, 11 of them using BoL)

Last 3-4 months we have been primarily playing Shadowdark, but are hoping to get back to our BoL Beasts and Barbarians Jalizar campaign.  We had one session a few weeks ago, and are going to try to get some session in during the next few weeks.

Happy New Year to Everyone!

First, hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving.

We been playing some Shadowdark RPG for the last month.  A bit of Warhammer Shadowdark and a bit of Monster Hunting in Etharis (Grim Hollow's world) using Shadowdark.

Now we are going to return to our Jalizar, The City of Thieves Campaign.  (Savage Worlds Beasts and Barbarians setting - using BoL rules).  Have some adventures ready to go for my wife's "Whitemouse" thief, Anya.  The last adventure we ran in this campaign was the Tower of the Elephant - Jalizar style, Anya's companion Rykard - a former Copper Helm Guard turned enforcer for the thief's guild, didn't make it out of the tower, so a new (or maybe a former companion that is returning...) will be joining her.

I got some fantasy ttrpging out of my system now and am itching for some good ol sword and sorcery.

Well, last night we finished our BoL "Hammer of Æs" campaign.  This campaign was set in the Hyborian Age, we started playing this campaign back in 2012 using the Mongoose Conan d20 rules.  Then in September of 2014, we switched over to BoL and have been playing it ever since.  (With some breaks in there for other campaigns...).

Finished the final series, I adapted the Mongoose Conan "Trial of Blood" adventure path to BoL.  Finished it with a great battle in the end, the Sorceress managed to complete her ritual casting to summon a greater demon (5 rounds worth of chanting, slicing a baby's leg for his blood, slicing her own hand, more chanting in ancient stygian and then ritually sacrificing the child - her own ).

Then she needed to make her spell casting task roll - a "15" she failed the roll (she rolled an 8 + 3 Mind & 2 Mage for a 13 total).  She had used her VPs to block several attacks with the Shattered Shield/Weapon maneuver.  So she didn't get to try a re-roll.  My wife's PC then finished her off with her dual-wielding attacks.

During the Epilogue, our PCs got titles of Nobility from King Conan and a Barony to control - they will first have to remove the current Baron (with King Conan's blessing!) who is a traitor to the Crown and is trying to separate from Aquilonia.  But that is a tale for another telling, maybe even a tale that will never be told...

A long campaign for us, but a good ending.  (If the stygian sorceress would have made her summoning roll, to summon the greater demon, it would have been curtains for the PCs, my gm/pc was down to 2 LB and 1 HP and my wife's PC was down to 3 LB and 1 HP.)

Going to play a little Shadowdark now, then back to our BoL Jalizar campaign for a while.

A friend of ours is using AI (I think ChatGPT) to put together some adventures.  He is working on a Hyborian age adventure for us to play in.  We are going to use the Shadowdark RPG rules for it.

The premise is that we start on a boat, the boat crashes or sinks, and we end up on an island... we will see what come out of it.  Scheduled for our next monthly game session.

He has already made the portraits for our characters, they were pretty good too.  I am going to have to look into this ChatGPT thing, if it can do stuff with BoL, it might be fun.

So over the last month or so, I have been on a Shadowdark RPG kick.  I bought the rule book and numerous PDF supplements for it.  I like it.

My wife is a dyed in the wool BoL fan.  Earlier this year, we were visiting my nephew in Indianapolis, he knows we like TTRPGs so he took us to a local shop.  Nice place, my wife was talking to the owner and told him that nowadays, BoL is her preferred game, and she really only likes playing it.  He told her that maybe she should branch out a bit and try some others, she said yeah, maybe.  But really didn't mean it. (I know my wife, 40 years of marriage, and another 4 dating prior... yeah, I know her!)

Over the last couple of months, she has tried Shadowdark with me, begrudgingly (along with another game - Eyes Beyond the Torchlight, she didn't care for that one at all.).  We have played 6 sessions of Shadowdark, to include a session with a friend too.  The last two sessions have been our Warhammer Campaign using BoL rules and also the Shadowdark rules to play each adventure back-to-back to compare the two systems - side by side, if you will.

After all of this, her statement was "Does Shadowdark do anything that BoL doesn't do?  I don't think so."  Then she said, "and the house rules that you are making for Shadowdark, you are just trying to turn it into a BoL version of Shadowdark"   Hmmmmm, she kind of has a point.

Oh well, like I said, I do like the Shadowdark Game, but really; BoL just works better for the two of us, and our gaming style.

Going back to our BoL Hyborian Age "Hammer of Æs" campaign, we are in the middle of the Mongoose d20 Conan adventure "Trial of Blood".  We are on part 4 of the 8-part adventure.

Like always, thank you Simon for a great system!  From both of us

Great adventure!
Are the characters going with Safrax "Toughs" or "Hero" level, just curious as to the set up.
Also, was the final battle between the Barenstarks and the Wolf Clan theatre of the mind, or did you guys run it with the Land Battle rules - or something else?  It's always interesting to see how different people run things.

Sounds like Allison really ran a good session.  My compliments!

Anyway, hope folks are keeping well and getting in some good S&S gaming too.

My wife and I are still running some BoL.   Taking a break from our long running Hyborian Age "Hammer of Æs" campaign and playing a BoL Warhammer Fantasy game.

Also have been checking out the Shadowdark RPG, running some one-shots and going to run some side-by-side adventures using BoL and Shadowdark, to see how they compare vs each other.

Have some Savage Worlds Beasts and Barbarians adventures to run with BoL too.  We did run the Tower of the Elephant a while back in Jalizar, it was fun.  My GM/PC died during the battle with the Mage Yara!  (Not the same ending as the Conan story at all )

Have a Warhammer Adventure using BoL tonight.  Got the counters and maps ready.
