So then a character with a career Physician 0 could try to heal someone but would make a roll of 2d6 plus the relevant ability? Basically it gives them a chance to use a skill, just no bonus?

So I probably missed this somewhere in the text, but I'm scratching my head over why someone would take a Career with a 0 rating. Would this let someone say, "Kalnor briefly apprenticed to the local blacksmith (Blacksmith 0), so he would recognize whether this is a decent sword or not."?
